Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellows Program

The program

The Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellows program supports outstanding scholars whose research is related to energy and the environment with a focus on innovative technological solutions, smart economic analyses, and/or impactful policy solutions to our most pressing energy and environmental challenges.

Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellows collaborate with Princeton faculty and/or senior researchers within an energy or environment-related field to articulate an interdisciplinary research plan that is aligned with the mission of the Andlinger Center. Applicants are encouraged to develop research plans that establish new collaborative links to or between faculty and researchers.

This program provides a unique opportunity for postdoctoral fellows to develop their careers through independent and interdisciplinary research, while working with one or more research mentors who are experts in their fields, pursue broad inter-disciplinary research combining science, engineering, technology, policy, and social dimensions, and engage in theoretical and/or experimental research, which is either fundamental or applied in nature.

Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellows

Amy Honnig Bassett

Amy Honnig Bassett completed her doctoral studies at Rowan University (Ph.D. 2024 in Chemical Engineering) and Drexel University under Professor Giuseppe R. Palmese. She developed fire-resistant epoxy thermosets for use in fiber-reinforced polymer composites by investigating the role of furan moieties on thermal decomposition and char formation.

As a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, Amy utilizes molecular design to develop polymers for energy storage applications in collaboration with Professors Emily C. Davidson and Rodney D. Priestley. This research focuses on enhancing the thermal stability and energy density of the polymers, ultimately advancing the accessibility of renewable energy and the electrification of transportation.

Jinshi Chen

Jinshi Chen

Jinshi Chen holds a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program. Under Dr. Britt Raubenheimer and Dr. Steve Elgar, he studied the momentum flux transport and turbulence structure under nearshore breaking waves via numerical simulations and field observations. His research elucidates the importance of wave roller and breaking-wave-turbulence in surfzone momentum and energy balance.

As a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, Jinshi collaborates with Professors Luc Deike and Michael Mueller to study the interaction between misaligned ocean wind and wave, and to improve current wave forecast models. The result of this research can then be applied to optimizing the control of offshore wind turbine platforms in complex seas to increase their efficiencies.

Nusrat Molla

Nusrat Molla is working to understand community-level impacts of clean energy transitions. She will work with Simon Levin, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Elke Weber, to study how communities relying on extractive industries will be impacted by clean energy transitions. She plans to combine perspectives from the social sciences with a complex systems modeling approach to understand the social and institutional dynamics that underlie community-level outcomes of energy policies and the factors that govern overall community resilience. Molla plans to conduct fieldwork for her research in the coal-mining regions of Appalachia.

Yifan Rao

Yifan Rao

Yifan Rao holds a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics from The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). Under the supervision of Professor Nanshu Lu, her thesis focused on the mechanics of thin-film bulging and poking with adhesive contact, guiding the design, assembly, and transfer of bio-integrated soft electronics. At UT Austin, she co-authored over ten publications in the interdisciplinary fields of mechanics, materials science, and electrical engineering.

As a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, Yifan collaborates with Professors Glaucio Paulino and Minjie Chen to develop an integrated mechanical, electrical, and magnetic origami-inspired robotic system. This research is focused on optimizing energy efficiency, enhancing sustainability, and improving overall performance relative to existing soft robotic technologies.

Debbie Zhuang

Debbie ZhuangDebbie Zhuang completed her doctoral studies at MIT in chemical engineering under Martin Z. Bazant, focusing on degradation of lithium-ion batteries using mathematical modeling and theoretical approaches. Her work elucidated the importance of statistical effects in lithium-ion batteries, and helped bridge the gap between microscopic and macroscopic scales to improve the performance and lifetime of lithium-ion batteries.

Following this, she worked in R&D at Samsung Semiconductor, aiding materials development from ab-initio to continuum methods for solid state batteries and semiconductor materials. Currently, as an Andlinger Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow, she studies supercooled water and carbon dioxide for environmental applications using theoretical and computational approaches under the mentorship of Dimitrios Fraggedakis and Mike A. Webb. Her work will be used to understand and mitigate the environmental impacts of excess carbon dioxide in climate change.
